Apr. 23- Ch. 23

As I read this chapter this morning the old saying came to mind, “Don’t do as I do, do as I tell you to do.” For Jesus this definitely applied to the religious leaders, “Don’t do as they do, do as they tell you to do.” I hope, as a pastor and leader, I would never have this said about me. But I am sure they are things in my life Jesus would say that about. It is changing those things where spiritual growth comes in.

Chapter 24 is a warning to teachers, leaders, followers of Jesus. We in many ways are in the chair of Moses. We, through the Holy Spirit, spending time with the Scriptures, time in church, get an inkling of how God wants us to lead our life. When we then devise statutes or expectations we place on others but do not follow ourselves we are asking for trouble. Woe to us when we act in a hypocritical way. As followers of Jesus, we are to both show and help others to follow Jesus, but more important do those deeds in our own lives. Before we try and remove the sliver in our brothers eye we need to be sure that through Christ we have removed the log in our own eye.

I never realized there were so many “Woes!” in this passage. After that sermon the Jewish leaders should have been moved if not terrified. The section on swearing by the gold or the temple or the offering vs the altar made me realize how convoluted the Jewish religion had become. Now I have to think about what we do and say that is actually tied more to our culture than to our faith in God–I know there are some things and I feel it is important to ferret them out.

I think one of the things that fall into this category is doing church the same way you’ve always done it without really giving thought to how God wants us to do church.

That is a very astute observation.
