Jan. 24- Ch. 24

Chapter 24 of Matthew is one of those chapters of the Bible where I want  to throw up my hands and say, “I just don’t get it!”  At one point Jesus tells his disciples that the things he is talking about ,”Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”  So was he wrong?  I don’t know.  I am not sure anyone knows for sure.  I wondering if he was speculating, because he says not even the Son knows God’s timing on this.  The thing I do take away from this chapter is we need to be ready.  It may or may not happen in our lifetime, but regardless, we need to be ready.

One Response to Jan. 24- Ch. 24

I know that Matthew is one of the three Synoptic Gospels–that agree with each other on various events and sayings in the life of Jesus. However, I was quite struck by how they are exactly the same wording for much of the description of the “signs of the end times”.

I am also interested in the “this generation shall not pass away”. One footnote said that one possible fulfillment was that that generation would see the destruction of the temple and much of Jerusalem which at one level fulfilled much of the description given. Of course we know that there will also be a generation that will see the actual end times.

I read Verses 4-29 more carefully than I have before and it is truly chilling. However, nations and kingdoms rising up, famines and earthquakes are only the beginning. I know that Christ could come at any time, but I have to suggest that “we ain’t seen nothin’ yet!”–that we have no idea of persecution as is described in verses 9-22.
