November 24- 1 John 3

v. 22-  “…receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.”  We have been talking in our prayer Bible study about “keys to effective prayer.”  One of those keys is following Jesus’ commands.  But here, John as a bit more, “and do what pleases him.”  I think this goes a bit deeper.  It gets at action and motive.  By that I mean, God would not be pleased if I followed all his commands and all the time grumbled about it.  However, he would be pleased is I did them out of love with the desire to please him.

That, Pastor, is a really important insight. I’ve considered my motivations on occasion (certainly not so regularly that it would upset me unduly) and have come to this same conclusion. It isn’t just what we do, but in what spirit we do it. I think the early Hebrews got away with the form without the substance and got would still bless them. I know he has blessed me regardless, but not nearly as much as when I get it “right.”
