June 20- John 20

vv. 8-9- “Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)”

It says they believed, but then John notes they still did not understand about his resurrection.  My question is, so what did they believe??  They had already acknowledged Jesus as Messiah, so what more did they believe if it was not believing in the resurrection???  Thoughts?

I wonder if the key here is that “Jesus HAD to rise from the dead.” In other words, could they have believed that he had risen, but not that that was an important part of the plan?
