May 28- 3 John

So here is a thought spurred on by Sharon.  If 2 John is in fact a letter written to a church, rather than an individual (and I think Sharon makes a good point for this), could 2 John be the letter John refers to in this letter when he writes, “I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us.”?

One way of looking at this letter is as a political move on John’s part to try to deal with the dissension caused by Diotrephes from long distance. He knows that Gaius is solid–probably a major leader–who simply needs to have a direction for action pointed out to him. John corroborates that Diotrephes is in the wrong. He also names Demetrius who may be younger or a less established leader, but still an important ally to try to help rein in those who have been upset by direct or indirect threat from Diotrephes.

Good thought! In your scenario it seems like Diotrephes may have blocked the distribution of the letter. Hmmmm!
