In this there is some interesting logic John uses to stress the importance of confession of sin. In verse 6 he says, “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” I am assuming when he says “walk in darkness” he is talking about sin. Then in v. 8 he says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” So the dilemma is we cannot have fellowship with God if we have sin, and if we say we are without sin we are deceiving ourselves. How do we get out of the dilemma? Verse 9. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” This logic makes our confession of sin all that more important!
