Apr. 19- John 19

Every time I think of the scene before Pilate I think of this big crowd of people yelling, “Crucify him.  Crucify him.”  But John notes in v. 6, “As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, ‘Crucify! Crucify!’”  So it may have been a very small percentage of the crowd who was calling for Jesus’ crucifixion.

But Pilate wanted to avoid a scene. There were “spies” for Caesar everywhere and he didn’t want anything to get out of hand. I think you may be very correct that it was a relatively small group but an influential one that might report on his response OR that might stir up an actual riot or even an uprising–something that must have always been in the back of his mind.
