“3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. ” Wow this is really Jesus speaking through John. John almost parrots the words Jesus used at the last supper.
In this chapter John spends a lot of time talking about not sinning if we know Jesus and thus God because Jesus keeps us from sinning–a summary of this is found in Verse 18: “We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.” I think John must have had something else in mind than what I recognize in myself and others as daily sin. In the previous paragraph (verses 16-17) he speaks of sin that leads to death and that which does not. I wish he had spelled that out a bit.
