Sept. 18- Ch. 18

Often we read this chapter and talk about the fact that vv. 15-17 should be the basis for church discipline. I am not sure when Jesus gave this to the disciples that was his intent. It is more like church redemption. Jesus talks about this right after he says, “In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.” We need to think of this as a way of bringing lost sheep back to the fold, and not as discipline.

    Jesus comments on the humbleness of a little child. To some extent that is a cultural reference, since children in our society are encouraged to be individualists and assert themselves. Nevertheless, children are the lowest on the societal “totem pole” as it were. I related today to the comment: “…unless you CHANGE and become LIKE little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” I have only begun to understand humbleness, but I think the word CHANGE, which is like the word REPENT is particularly important here. And, boy, does that CHANGE take a long time! Humbleness is related directly to the “whose in charge of my life and daily acts” issue. Progress is measured in microns….
