Aug. 19- Ch. 19

When Jesus tells the Pharisees, concerning marriage, “What God has joined, let no man separate,” they respond with, “Why did Moses COMMAND a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”  They used the word command as if they had no choice they had to do it.  In some respect that is true.  The reality was that when Moses gave the command, the common practice was for men to verbally divorce their wives, which left the woman in a state of limbo.  Moses was commanding them if you are going to do this (which was and is not God’s intention) then you have to do it in writing, making it clear to all what it going on.

  1. Larry Martin says:

Jesus says it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. The rich at that time were looked upon as worthy by many. Today this might read the rich or accomplished. When we become rich or accomplished or esteemed by our fellow man our focus turns to what we have or have done. It is no longer on God but on us. As long as our focus is on ourselves or our accomplishment or on what we have that is where our hearts are at.

The lesson here is that as a human you can’t do it by yourself. Boy, have I spent a LOT of time trying to “do it myself”. That is not only impossible, it’s very arrogant at some level–hardly the humility that God requires of us.
